Photographic exhibition “Sguardi tra passato e presente. Francesco, Andrea e Paola Leoni. Generazioni di fotografi”

19.12.2023

December 21, 2023 – January 14, 2024
Galata Museo del Mare, Saletta dell’Arte – Genoa

A new opportunity to learn “up close” about the work of Francesco Leoni, one of the greatest Genoese photojournalists of the 20th century.

Through 16 panels, 8 hardbacks, 40 photographs, videos, articles and objects, the exhibition aims to highlight the core values that guided the artist throughout his career. Values passed down to his children Andrea and Paola, also photographers. It is a journey through a family dimension, which takes us to discover the stories told by the three photographers with their portraits, whether of well-known or unknown people.

Constant in the Leoni family’s photography is the search for the right balance between technique, framing and emotion, as well as the message of the importance of preserving the memory of the past in order to interpret our present with greater awareness.

The exhibition is organized by Istituzione Mu.MA, Associazione Promotori Musei del Mare, Fondazione Paolo e Giuliana Clerici and the Cambiaso Risso Group. Curated by Anna Dentoni, Paola Leoni, Laura Malavolta and Daniela Ronzitti, it was produced in collaboration with the Liguria Coordination of Icom-Italia, under the patronage of the City of Genoa and the Region of Liguria.

Three special events are planned as part of the exhibition and to be booked through the Eventbrite app:

  • Thursday, Jan. 4 and Friday, Jan. 5, 2024, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., photo shoot with photographer Paola Leoni who will recreate, inside the exhibition, a real photographic set to portray the Museum’s visitors who request it.

Proceeds will be used by the Sea Museums Promoters Association to support the project to establish an annual scholarship for a deserving student interested in pursuing studies in the arts and/or photography.

This initiative is part of the journey to develop young talent, which has been undertaken for some time by the Associazione Promotori Musei del Mare and which for 2024, in collaboration with the Fondazione Paolo and Giuliana Clerici, the Istituzione Mu.MA and the Cambiaso Risso Group, includes a further commitment to contribute to the future of deserving young students.
