History of the Italian Merchant Navy

“Storia della Marineria Mercantile Italiana” (The History of the Italian Merchant Navy) is a work published in four volumes, which endeavours to cover key periods of Italy’s Merchant Navy in images and words.

An enthralling voyage right from the origins of shipping in Italy to its contribution towards Italy’s political and economic development, it tells the stories of people and entrepreneurs, featuring boat owners, captains and sailors in the starring roles.

Curated by Pierangelo Campodonico, director of the Mu.MA, the work is the brainchild of Fondazione Paolo e Giuliana Clerici and is aimed at a broad audience. It covers topics which have, until now, been reserved for specialists. For the first time ever, it sets out to give an overview of the many studies of individual aspects developed over time.

The series is published in two languages, with the complete texts in both Italian and English, allowing it to meet the needs of foreign academics looking to learn more about Italy’s seafaring tradition.

The iconographic contribution provided by the partnership between the Mu.MA and Fondazione Paolo e Giuliana Clerici has proven a crucial one. The partnership had already been forged with the “Navigare nell’Arte” (Navigating in Art) exhibition space dedicated to maritime-themed works collected with passion by Paolo Clerici over the years.
